Marley Park Elementary School Opens in Surprise, Arizona
First vertical structure completed in new community
Surprise, AZ (Aug. 4, 2004) -
Marley Park Elementary School opens to its first class of students on Thursday, August 12, becoming the first vertical structure completed in the community of Marley Park, a 956-acre Surprise, Arizona new home community being developed in Surprise by Scottsdale-based DMB.
Located on Sweetwater Avenue, near Waddell Road and Bullard Avenue, the K-8 elementary school is situated within a 45-acre public-use education and recreation complex in Marley Park. The school and surrounding grounds occupy a 15-acre section, donated by DMB to the Dysart Unified School District.
"One of the special things about DMB's donation of land for Marley Park Elementary School is that they provided a prime piece of real estate in the middle of the community and surrounded it with parks," said Lance Chebultz, principal of Marley Park Elementary School. "That shows DMB's commitment to education and makes for a much better learning environment for students."
With residents at Marley Park moving into the Northwest Phoenix new home community in early spring 2005, the first class of students will be drawn from areas within the Dysart Unified School District. Nearly 1,000 students are expected to enroll for the 2004-2005 school year.
"Education is one of DMB's central values because we understand the impact that quality education has on the greater community and on an individual's quality of life. That's why it was important to us that Marley Park Elementary School be the first structure built in the community," said Irene Carroll, DMB vice president and general manager for Marley Park. "We're pleased to donate the land for the school and look forward to the vibrancy that the school will contribute to the greater community."
Just north of the school campus, an additional five-acre, mixed-use area will feature ball fields and open spaces that will be used for school activities while classes are in session and by the greater Surprise community at other times. Initially owned by the school and maintained by the city of Surprise, the title for the five acres will eventually be transferred to the city, although the school will enjoy continued use of the land during and immediately following the school day.
Marley Park is designed to be a classically styled Arizona home development celebrating the most valued characteristics of historic neighborhoods. Taking its cues from the area's rich agrarian history, the community of Marley Park emphasizes open spaces, shade trees and diverse, traditional architecture.
